A method to improve leaf succulence quantification BABT
Mantovani,André.
Leaf succulence has important physiological and ecological implications. Currently it is quantified by Delf's index (fresh weight/leaf area) and fresh weight/ dry weight ratio. Both indeces are reconsidered and a new index is proposed. Shade and sun leaves from terrestrial, hemiepiphytic and epiphytic aroids were studied. Delf's formula, which does not consider dry weight, overestimated leaf succulence. As fresh weight / dry weight ratio (fw / dw) does not consider leaf area, plants with the same fw / dw ratio were more than five times different in area. The last case was only possible with a decrease in surface / volume ratio and a increase of mesophyll thickness, components not measured by fw / dw ratio. The new index proposed here, which takes into...

Anatomia comparada da folha e espata de espécies de Anthurium (Araceae) ocorrentes na Mata Atlântica Rev. Bras. Bot.
Mantovani,André; Filartiga,Arinawa Liz del Prado; Coelho,Marcus Alberto Nadruz.

Arg. e R. macrophylla Benth. (Rubiaceae) Acta Botanica
Mantovani,André; Gomes,Mario; Gomes,Doria Maria Saiter; Vieira,Ricardo Cardoso.

Effects of leaf herbivory on the bromeliad Aechmea blanchetiana: a study of selective feeding by the scraper Acentroptera pulchella Acta Botanica
Magalhães,Noa; Ferreira,Lucas Bevilaqua; Leitão,Gilda; Mantovani,André.
The scraper Acentroptera pulchella (Chrysomelidae, Hispinae) feeds on the leaves of Aechmea blanchetiana (Bromeliaceae), but not indiscriminately. This insect apparently concentrates its attack on the apical region of the intermediate leaves from the bromeliad tank. To characterise the potential influence of leaf defensive strategies on the intraspecific feeding pattern of A. pulchella on the leaves of the bromeliad A. blanchetiana, we quantified the apparent intraspecific preference of this feeding pattern; compared distinct leaves and portions in relation to morpho-physiological, mechanical, nutritional and chemical anti-herbivore strategies; and investigated whether some or all these defensive strategies help explain the observed feeding pattern. A....

Size-dependent allocation of biomass to ancillary versus flowers of the inflorescences of the epiphyte Tillandsia stricta Soland (Bromeliaceae) Acta Botanica
Mantovani,André; Iglesias,Ricardo Rios.
The amount of resources invested in reproduction is closely correlated to plant size. However, the increase in reproductive investment is not always proportional to the increase in vegetative growth, as the proportion of plant resources allocated to reproduction can increase, decrease or be maintained along different plant sizes. Although comprising thousand of species, epiphytes are poorly studied in relation to reproductive allocation (RA). We describe the variation in the RA of the epiphytic bromeliad Tillandsia stricta Soland with increasing plant sizes. Our goal is not only to evaluate the RA of the whole inflorescence but also quantify the contribution of ancillary structures in the final RA of this plant species. With increasing sizes of T. stricta...

The effect of water stress on seed germination of three terrestrial bromeliads from restinga Rev. Bras. Bot.
Mantovani,André; Iglesias,Ricardo R..
Bromeliad seedlings are rarely found on sandy coastal plains (restinga), limited, probably, by stressful conditions and/or specific abiotic requirements for germination. The effect of water stress on rate, time, synchronicity and spreading of germination was evaluated here for three terrestrial bromeliads from the restinga of Maricá using osmotic solutions of polyethyleneglicol 6000 (PEG 6000), from 0.0 to -0.26 MPa for 30 days. Water stress induced by PEG lowered rate and increased time and synchronicity values, besides the number of daily events of bromeliad seed germination, under water potentials between 0.00 to -0.14 MPa. No seeds germinated under water potentials lower than -0.14 MPa. These results reinforce a constant and/or high moisture...
